Does Plastic Ware in Microwave Pose Health Problems?
Those who use or like plastic ware are confused thinking that whether using plastic in microwaves is safe or can pose any health problem. It is true that people may prey to dreaded diseases because of chemicals leaching out of plastic into food while it’s being heated in a microwave. But today’s advanced technology has removed this concern. Still you can use plastic ware and they won’t pose any health risks.
• Buy such plastic ware that have “microwave-safe” or “microwavable” label on the container. This will ensure that those plastic containers won’t melt, crack or fall apart when used in the microwave.
• If you want to be sure, place your glass / china / earthenware / plastic ware that is microwavable in a microwave oven filled with a cup of cold tap water. Keep the microwave on high for 1 minute. If the water gets warm and the container is cool, you can sure that the ware is microwave safe.
• Check whether the plastic wrap is microwave-safe otherwise it leaches chemicals into foods when heated. So, always keep a space between food and plastic wrap. In case of paper towels, choose the plain white kind because colored or recycled fibers may have dyes or chemicals.
• For plastic ware always choose polyethylene because it doesn’t contain plasticizers (it can cause health problem).
• Avoid keeping fatty foods, such as meat and cheese, in plastic containers or plastic wrap.
• Use microwaveable meal cartons only once, and throw it out after being used.
• Don’t use plastic storage bags, grocery bags, or aluminum foil in the microwave.
